Falcon’s San Martín Soil Analysis Project
DSC02733

A large-scale soil analysis initiative aimed at supporting coffee farmers in the San Martín region with science-based agronomic recommendations. By analyzing soil health and providing customized fertilization plans, the project helps farmers enhance productivity, reduce input costs, and improve environmental sustainability.

Origin: Peru (San Martín)
Timeline: 2024-2025
Partner orgs: Falcon Coffees, responsAbility Climate Smart Agriculture & Food Systems Fund

THE OPPORTUNITY

Soil degradation and inefficient fertilization strategies are key barriers to improving coffee productivity in the San Martín region. Many smallholder farmers apply fertilizers without soil data, leading to nutrient imbalances, reduced yields, and unnecessary costs. By conducting large-scale soil testing, this project aims to equip farmers with actionable data to optimize nutrient applications, boost coffee production, and minimize environmental impact.

THE PLAN

The project will:

• Conduct soil sampling across 600+ coffee farms (300 in year 1 and 300 in year 2) to establish a regional soil health baseline.
• Provide farmers with personalized soil analysis reports and fertilization recommendations.
• Train farmers on sustainable soil management and efficient nutrient application.
• Support producer cooperatives in adopting data-driven agronomic practices.
• Integrate findings into future technical assistance programs for long-term impact.

THE RESULTS

The project is currently in the data collection phase, with results expected by late 2025. Progress so far:

• 201 producers (67% of the target y1) have been registered and are participating in the initiative.
• Soil sampling is set to begin soon, pending completion of farmer engagement activities.
• Heavy rains have caused some delays, but producers are expressing increasing interest in growing trust in the project.
